Dear Tina Fey

9.23.2012

Dear Tina Fey,

First, let me begin by saying that I think you're quite funny. My husband and I went to see Date Night in the theater, and I almost peed my pants I was laughing so hard. We even went so far as to purchase the movie when I saw it on clearance at Target for $7.

I recently read your book Bossypants, and I was disappointed to find that it wasn't as funny as I had been led to believe. To be honest, I thought the funniest lines were the endorsements on the back. It just felt like you were trying too hard.

It was a quick read, I will give you that. And I learned a few things about you that I didn't know before, like how you got your scar and how the whole you-being-Sarah-Palin-on-SNL thing came about. Interesting, yes, but unfortunately I can't give Bossypants a glowing recommendation. I rated it as a 2 on Goodreads, which means "it was ok." I don't mean to be harsh. Trust me, it could be worse. This was no Love in the Time of Cholera. Seriously, Worst. Book. Ever.

But I digress.

You're obviously funny, but maybe for now you should just stick to writing for 30 Rock.

Respectfully yours,
Underwhelmed in Oklahoma City

Either I like really bad books or just have bad humour - but I thought this book was hilarious. I thought her jokes were subtle enough to bring just enough humour without going overboard. Bummer that you didn't like it.

I didn't read the book, I listened to Tina Fey read it to me on a long drive last year, and I loved it! I'm sure it's funnier in her voice, and I think she added some things, for instance we actually got to hear the SNL skits, but I was thoroughly entertained for 9 hours or however long it ended up being. I listened to some parts of it twice. :)

I thought it was actually pretty funny. Though I thought the second half was less laugh-out-loud funny than the first. But there were times when I was reading it and laughing so hard and Curby kept saying, "what are you reading?!" and then I'd read it aloud and he would chuckle (and sometimes laugh) but mostly I would barely be able to read parts out loud because I thought it was so funny. But that being said, I know a lot of people who thought it was just OK, so you are not alone. And I probably wouldn't go back and read it a second time - because you know. it was funny then, but who knows if it would be funny again.

I'm not here to disagree with your review, but I'm just going to say that if you want to read trying to hard to be funny, read Rachel Dratch's book Girl Walks into a Bar. Actually, don't read it. Just believe me when I say I was uncomfortable reading it because it was so not effortless. Apparently the second half isn't all "I'm not pretty like the other SNL girls, poor me!" but I didn't get that far.
