Tomato Dodge: It's a 5k That's Also a Food Fight!

9.09.2013

(Yes, I'm posting twice today. Don't start expecting two for ones now, because it ain't gonna happen. But this is important!)

Have you heard of Tomato Dodge? I hadn't either until a few weeks ago when a promotion randomly popped up in my Facebook feed. It sounded crazy and awesome, so of course I clicked on it.

You guys.

This is a 5k that's also a food fight with tomatoes! Is there anything else to say? I think not.

The idea of the race is inspired by the annual La Tomatina festival, and basically you run or walk a 5k course while having a food fight with tomatoes.

All the tomatoes are "throwaways," which means they're either damaged or too old for stores, so you're not wasting any food. It's all going to get tossed anyway. Also, the tomatoes have been pre-soaked in boiling water, so they are soft and won't hurt when you get hit. Genius, no?

Does this not sound like the craziest thing you've ever heard of?
Someone tell me I'm not the only person who thinks this is awesome.

So, okay. Sign ups. Because I know you're going to be all over this.

Right now the Tomato Dodge is only appearing in only a few locations, and boy am I lucky that Oklahoma City is one of them! The others are: Fort Worth, TX, and Tampa, Florida. (Also previously appeared in Nashville.)

If you want to see the Tomato Dodge come to your city, sign up on their email list.

For those of you in OKC, Ft. Worth, or Tampa, make sure you get signed up on the VIP registration list so you can get the cheapest price when registration opens. I have no idea what that will be, but one thing's for sure: it's going to be cheaper than the other fools who don't get on the VIP list.

Registration for OKC opens Wednesday, Sept 11, and race day is October 26, so sign up for the VIP soon and get the cheapest price.* See you there?

*I received a free race entry for writing this blog post, but all excitement about this race is definitely my own.
**Email me for a promo code for $7 off registration. (theladyokie@gmail.com)

This is the best thing I've seen all day lol!

They have one in Toronto..now if only I could run 5km....ha!

HA - oh my gosh, I'm such an idiot. I read the weblink as "Toronto Dodge" thinking it was the Tomato Dodge in Toronto. Ya, the link is "tomato dodge." Let's just leave it at the fact that there is no run in Toronto. End story.

That looks so fun!

no tomato farms around here, but I know of a few pepper farms in the area...and we live 1/2 mile from some onion fields. I'm pretty sure an onion dodge would be painful ;)

Oh man, I have certainly never heard of anything like that!! That's definitely crazy. But I can see how it would be fun....except for the running part in my opinion but lots of people do seem to like running...

I could totally see you doing this. I wanna know, can I sign up to throw tomatoes? Sounds like good therapy.

Very interesting. I have a friend trying to connivence me to do one of those color run things

Do you have to wear googles? I look so lame working out already so adding googles would not be any kind of improvement!

I've read things where 'real racers' think these kind of things take away from running - I am not among those people! The crazier the run - the better!

I absolutely love this - I've just signed up for a zombie run next month AND I have an electric run in Austin in a couple weeks.

That looks like a good time!!! Good stress relief ;)

I have to say, I really, really wanted to get on board with this, but I have this feeling in my gut that just says RUN. I think I'd have the fastest 5k of my life in this one!

Haha this does sound fun!! Now it just needs to head over to the east coast :) I'm thinking of doing a zombie 5k - even though having something scary chase after me is in my top 3 fears..

This looks so fun! My kind of 5k :)

That looks fun!! I'll have to wait till they have one in Boston, but fun!

Susannah said...

Oh my goodness! I want to do this run SO BADLY now!

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. Do they have any sort of regulations about who gets to do the throwing... because this could get sort of intense! :)

I'm a little relieved there's no race near me because then I'd have to decide whether or not I'd be brave enough to do it, haha. But I absolutely can't wait to hear all about it after you do!!

OMG i wanna goooooo!!!!

Haha oh my gosh. A tomato race? What in the??? I feel like there is always some new "race" coming out - I never know what's next! But I think it's so cool - if it gets people exercising, it's definitely a good thing!

This is hilarious. My husband will suggest we do this in the yard with our garden tomatoes instead of me spending money to do the color run!! I'm not going to show it to him, though....

Sounds like a blast!

Wouldn't it hurt to get splatted in the face?

This is absolutely incredible! I did a color run a couple of months ago and had a blast, but this looks like even more fun!

I hope they make their way to Baltimore or DC! If not, I may have to resort to running around my town throwing tomatoes at people...

This is HILARIOUS!!! What a funny thing to put into a run, and also awesome.

No way! I would actually hate to have tomatoes thrown at me but this sounds like SO much fun at the same time!!
