5 Things I Never Talk About on My Blog

2.15.2014

*The credit for this post idea goes to Jenny. She's fabulous and brilliant, and I read everything she posts. You need to check her out.

If you know me in real life, then you know there aren't many topics I don't talk about. For the most part, I don't really believe in TMI, and supposedly taboo subjects like salary and weight don't bother me all that much either. I like to think I'm pretty honest on this blog, but there are a few things I don't think I've ever written about.

1.
My commute

*No, I didn't take these pictures while I was driving! That would be really unsafe.

The drive to and from work takes either 25 or 40 minutes. In normal rush-hour traffic it takes 25 minutes. If there's been an accident or a cop is doing radar or construction is slowing everyone down or people just decide to take their sweet time, it takes 40. Never longer or shorter, and never between.

When I'm not listening to an audio book, I'm jamming out hard to country music.
Sometimes when I'm running early I stop at Panera and get a muffin.

All in all, it's really not a bad drive. The worst part of it is coming home. There's construction on my exit, and there's a huge backup at the light. If you don't time it right, you sit in a long line for 4 or 5 light changes, and it's really annoying.

2.
My love for skim milk.

I. Love. Skim. Milk.
Yes, it tastes like water. That's why I love it. I refuse to drink 1% and 2% milk. I feel very strongly about this.

Don't even try to argue with me, or I'll be all like,

3.
My apartment

The only thing I really talk about is the fact that I wish I lived in a house instead of this apartment. But I think I may have finally made my peace with that. We just signed another year lease, so that's happening, and I just need to suck it up and stop complaining. I have a place to live after all. What more do I need?

I'm not really keen on taking you on a tour or showing you all our stuff, because I feel weird about internet weirdos seeing my house and maybe thinking, "Hey, they have a TV. Maybe I should steal it."

I don't know. People are weird. You have to be careful. And since I can't paint our walls and have limited space to decorate, I don't feel like there's anything particularly interesting to show you. Thus, I don't. Also, the lighting is terrible in here, so the pictures wouldn't turn out well anyway.

4.
How often I make cookies

I make cookies a lot. A LOT. I love it. But what I am going to do? Blog every time I make cookies? No, because it would ruin any credibility I may have as a running guru. I LITERALLY have sugar cookies sitting on my counter that I made last night and a bowl of frosting in the fridge.

Actually... can we just forget I told you about the cookies? Kthanksbye.

5.
Pop culture

A lot of people like blogging about TV shows (*cough* The Bachelor *cough*), music they're loving, celebrities, even stuff that's going around social media like the Duck Dynasty thing that went down with A&E a few months ago.

I don't keep up with many TV shows, and you've all seen my phone, so it doesn't make much sense for me to pretend I'm all "in the know" about pop culture references. So just in case you thought I was, let me tell you: I'm not. When I watch award shows, I probably only know 5% of the nominees.

Mostly, though, I don't blog about pop culture because I would rather just blog about myself.
__________

What do you never blog about?
Anyone else out there love making cookies?

Hahahahaha. Your last line. Such a good point. I prefer reading about you to pop culture anyway.

I am so not a cookie-making person. It usually doesn't turn out well, and I don't know why. I don't think I even care because there's always someone else willing to make the cookies. I can do muffins and other fluffier things, but cookies...you bake them, and I will eat them.

I never blog about anything because I feel like if I start my blog again, I have to keep it up and I'm bad at commitment. So, I'll just keep reading yours.

Unrelated: I was laughing to myself in the car today about how many times I've had some awkward or absurd undertaking with you (e.g., "please retrieve a 5-cent bracelet for me"). I'm going to blame it on you not me. Ha. Never mind it's me.

Elizabeth Lynn said...

Oh your cookies make me want to bake some cookies!!! Yum!! And I completely agree with the skim milk versus any other milk thing!

Christina @ The Murrayed Life said...

1. I hate traffic.
2. Laughed out loud. That gif coupled with skim milk? bahahaha
3. I bought a crib and chest of drawers on craigslist today for the nursery that is just not the right shade of white, as in it's tan (blech), and I've been annoyed for spending the money on it but felt pressure because this baby could come really soon and I just want to have things settled. And then I thought about how first world I am that I'm even complaining about this. I have a lovely set, a healthy baby on the way, and a place to put both in. I mean, come on Christina. So I appreciated you also saying "what more do you need?" because sometimes I have to give myself that kick.
4. I would, but then I'd eat them all. And I don't run. I think that's probably WHY you run. It's a give and take relationship.
5. I'm more in the know than you apparently, but not even close to the majority of those schmucks. ;)

And me, I don't write about touchy subjects like politics or religion or most things that I actually would like to. Maybe I will sometime, but I'm just not ready yet. It's a scary thing, especially when you know that the majority of the blogging world (especially some mom bloggers) feel differently and don't really like difference. I don't know... Maybe I'm psyching myself out a bit much, but I don't think so.

I love making cookies! I've always been a cookie person, much more so than a cake person.
This may sound weird, but I never blog about most of the things you normally see bloggers post about. Examples: beauty, fashion, traveling, parenting etc. Don't get me wrong- I love beauty fashion, cooking and so on and so forth. I'm just not interested in yapping about those things on my blog.

Beka @ Sunshine to the Square Inch said...

I love cookies so much I had to put on my New Years goal to only make them once a quarter. That was a fail! fail! fail! I already thawed out and ate the cookie dough in my freezer, I 'made' a batch of cookies for small group (taste tested lots of dough and lots of cookies), and then I had to make heart sugar cookie with loads of icing for Valentine's Day. All in all, I'm doing pretty good (not!).

Skim milk? Really? You should just drink water. If I make coffee with skim milk it isn't creamy and it won't froth for me and that makes me annoyed. However ... you don't drink coffee and I don't drink milk (unless it is in my coffee).

shelleystirs said...

We drink 1/2% milk here.
I don't make cookies often because of the food allergies we deal with here. The egg-free recipes are just not the same.
My commute is 25 minutes on a good day (except for Saturdays, then it's 15 minutes because traffic is so much lighter--and I take surface streets the entire trip).
And my goal is to paint every room in hour house before the end of the year. Only the bedrooms and a full bath left!

shelleystirs said...

**our, not hour. Silly autocorrect!

Megan said...

This is hilarious! I also love skim milk, but my fiance likes 2 percent, so we've settled on 1 percent as a compromise. The funny thing is, I used to hate skim milk because I lived on a dairy and drank milk straight out of the tank, but now that I'm used to skim milk, I think whole milk is disgusting!

Betsy said...

SKIM MILK ALL THE WAY. Jon likes 2% in his tea, so it'll be interesting to see what kinds of fridge wars we get into once he's here...

The Lady Okie said...

I had a different GIF, but then I found that one and was like it's perfect!

Can you paint the crib and drawers? maybe that's more involved than you want to get.... but anyway, a few weeks ago I was complaining because my freezer was too small, and then I was like HELLO. why don't you just be happy about the fact that you have enough food to completely FILL your freezer? I really hate myself sometimes.

And yes, it is handy that I run, because I love me some cookies. Usually I end up bringing a plate to Jordan's parents because otherwise we'd eat them all.

I have written about faith before, but I definitely haven't written in depth as much as I could or might like to. There is always that worry that people will hate you and write mean things or stop following you. I shouldn't care, but I do. But it also takes a lot of work to portray what you want to say in writing to strangers you can't actually talk to in person, and usually I just want to be funny.

Braums skim milk is the only milk that is allowed in out house. Except for soy milk now that my daughter is lactose intolerant. Maybe Braums needs to come up with a version of that too.

Tara said...

I might know even less about pop culture than you do... And I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out on anything!

No shame about making cookies all the time! We've been eating chocolate chip cookies every single night for at least two weeks. It's ridiculous... but delicious :)

The Girl who Loved to Write said...

Isn't commuting so weird? Mine is like that too..it either takes 40 minutes or it takes an hour and fifteen..rarely in between. I do not understand.

Jenna Griffin | Gold & Bloom said...

Hahaha, I feel the same way about my house. I like it and all, but the photos would never turn out right. And there are creepers out there that might see my precious cat, Lucy, and will want to come and steal her. I can't risk that.

As for cookies, I've baked 3 batches this week.

Niken said...

oh wow. i think i have millions so now when i think about it i can't remember a single one because the thought of them all overwhelmed me. work, commute, work travel, my flat, the places i've been lived in, just so many. my head spinning.

my commute for the next few months is 55 minutes to 1 hour. and i don't even have anything to complaint about that.

Curious Runner said...

Baha, love this post. I'm pretty sure I say that about all your posts...
I don't make cookies anywhere near as much as I used to or would like to, but that's why I used to be a chubster and am not so much now. I usually just make them to giveaway now... Sometimes they don't make it though.

I don't blog about parenthood (aka the daily details of my baby and my life as a mother)- yes it makes some one line guest appearances in some blog posts but no one really cares about how much my baby pooed, slept, ate, spewed, drank, dribbled, or whatever else babies do. All I mention is how cool my son is and how cute.

I actually don't blog about much else other than running. As my title is Curious Runner I try (emphasis) to keep my blog mostly about running and health and fitness schmack. Not always the way though :)

1) Your commute pictures!! I feel like I just went home for a few minutes. I laughed at your note about how the pictures were not taken. 2) You like skim, I like it whole (and preferably straight from the cow!). We can still be friends, right? 3) I'm with you on this. I actually like our apartment a lot, but, there are approximately 2 photo ops in our apartment. So, I basically just use the same photo over and over when it seems appropriate. 4) I see nothing wrong with this at all. 5) I love that you don't care about pop culture! Really. I don't necessarily care, but I know a few things. Come to think of it, how DO I know things about pop culture though?

Rachel said...

I so don't know or care about pop culture...I'm always kind of amazed by people who do, but they are very useful to have on your team when you play trivial pursuit! I only know a little about country people due to listening to the country radio stations. I don't blog much about the interior of my house either--primarily because of the reason that photos would just look really weird...I definitely understand the concern about not really wanting to be blatantly obvious about what stuff you have that's worth stealing, too! Although, one time I did a humorous post about my entertainment center...my tv was purchased in approximately 2000...actually my little brother was considering whether he wants us to give it to him for free when we move, and he's like "No, I think I want a flat screen."
If you can't even give away your tv for free to broke college students...that's saying something! :P

Confessions: I am a long distance runner and I also make cookies at least once a week. If you know of a support group, let me know. But we need the carbs, right??

Katie said...

i love skim milk too!! and I make banana bread ALL the time. with chocolate chips and don't count it as a dessert even though I eat it after dinner. :)

Emily @ Ember Grey said...

This was so hilarious! Thanks for the laugh. Aaaand…. I'm off to make cookies. So thanks for that, too.

Kerry @ Till Then Smile Often said...

I posted once about my commute and it was the Office Space GIF, though now that I think about it you may not get than reference? Does it fall into pop culture. My commute is 40-60 minutes and it is the things I most dislike so I don't talk much about it or it will stress me out.

Unknown said...

I love how your list includes 95% of what I don't blog about, especially my commute, which I am learning to love because of the audiobook factor. Have you listened to any lately that have made the commute seem to go faster? I'm reaching the end of my barrel! But I'm on the opposite side of the pop culture spectrum as you--in fact, it's kind of pathetic how much I know about pop culture!

Jenny Fish said...

I may or may not have pictures of several different kinds of cookies just taking up space on my camera because I realize I can't blog about making cookies every single week. Feel you there! And I don't blog about... my job or coworkers... I think that's my only rule. I think it's unprofessional and I cringe inside every time someone complains about their job on their blog - your boss can see that!!!

Erin LFF said...

I don't drink milk hardly EVER, but when I do, it's definitely skim milk. I can't even look at the other stuff, yuck! I don't blog about our house much either... here and there if we do something new (which is like, never) but I'm like you... nothing too interesting to show and the lighting is def AWFUL in our house. We have almost zero overhead lighting except in the kitchen, so lamps everywhere!

Love it. And now I want cookies. Oh and I am so with you on NOT knowing anything pop culture and having even less interest in typing up my opinions on what I don't know. :)

Look---I love that you love making cookies. Not trying to judge--but the bachelor posts I don't get! Lol. Maybe it is because I don't watch! haha.

And I feel completely socially inept when it comes to social media. I don't have a Facebook....I do have twitter and instagram (even though I don't really use it!). I just learned what #OOTD meant! haha.

The Lady Okie said...

That really does make me feel so much better! I say we do need the carbs ;)

Jennifer Prod said...

so you're saying you know nothing of pop culture and everything about cookies?? this sounds like the foundation of a deep and lasting friendship :) no celebs, just sweets, and maybe a bit of milk to wash it down.

Alyx said...

My husband probably wishes I made cookies as often as you. Actually, I'm sure he does.

Allison said...

I literally have cookies in the oven right now! It's pretty much the apocalypse when we don't have them around my house! :)

Elizabeth said...

I was just telling my husband I feel so "uncool" because I never have time to watch TV and all my coworkers, friends, bloggers, people everywhere talk about all the shows out there (bachelor, biggest looser, american idol, downton abbey, anything on netflix...) and I am like "how do people find time to watch tv?!!?" anyways. I am glad you are not in the know either... maybe we are the cool ones ;) lol

Debbie said...

When my sons were young I made cookies all of the time! I really do enjoy the process, but without them here to help eat them, I'd eat them all!

Unknown said...

Haha love this! I'm inspired to do a post like this of my own now :)

Holly @ Hello Audrey Ruth said...

Oh commuting. I certainly don't miss this. Adam and I picked our house based on my commute, kind of sad I know. My boss just told me that our offices are moving in a few months and I about had a breakdown because my commute will be 30 minutes now instead of 5 min.I'm considering finding a new job ;) Ok, not really.

And skim milk, really? Just the thought of it makes me cringe. Milk grosses me out in the first place but skim is just so ... watery! Ha!

And, great idea for a post, I'm glad you stole it. These are my favorite kinds of posts.

I have just lately (like in the last week or so) noticed that Braum's skim milk has a weird taste. I thought it was just the store so got it at another and still the same weird taste - like the cow ate some pungent hay, etc. I remember that being the problem with "store bought" milk - so I hope it's me and not that Braum's changed something. Otherwise I'll have to go to 1% to mask the taste. I love milk too :) We're all lucky we can digest it easily. I feel sorry for people who can't.

Brita Long said...

I haven't been able to drink milk (or have ice cream or milkshakes) in about 17 years, BUT during my milk-drinking childhood days, I LOVED skim milk. I drank that stuff 2-5 times a day. And 1% or 2% was so gross to me.
