Keep It Local OKC: S&B Burger Joint

2.11.2014

A few months ago, 198 of you answered some questions for my blog survey. Then I spent a ridiculous amount of time making pie charts and posted the responses. I didn't really change anything I do here based on the responses, but it was helpful to see what kinds of posts you all enjoy reading, and I got a few topic requests that I will do my best to cover on this blog in 2014.

Surprisingly, I got a few requests for posts about local stuff around OKC, and at first I was like, heck no. But then I thought about it, and it's actually a good idea, because despite what you may think and even despite what I thought when I moved here, Oklahoma City is actually really cool.

One of the things OKC has that I think is awesome is a focus on keeping it local. For $10, you can buy a "Keep it Local" card, which gives you discounts and other perks to local OKC shops, restaurants, and other businesses. You can find the entire list of vendors on the Keep it Local websiteMy goal for 2014 is to check out as many of these restaurants and shops as I can! (*This is not a sponsored post. Keep it Local has no idea who I am.)

Recently I met some friends for a weekday lunch at S&B Burger Joint, and Jordan was able to come too because he was off work that day AND my Keep it Local card got us 10% off our lunch. Winning.

I was also winning because I got the boys to take a picture outside the restaurant. You can see how happy they were about it.
Apparently it was bright. I don't know.
His beard looks so red in this picture!
Don't mind my ghetto 1998 phone there to the right.

The burger menu is full of crazy twists. Like the one with peanut butter on it...? Kind of scared to try it, but I also think you can't go wrong with peanut butter. Kind of like bacon, which coincidentally, is also on the peanut butter burger. If that's not heart healthy, I don't know what is.

There's a burger called "Hot Lips," which I told Jordan he should try and then winked at him just to make sure he caught my drift. But he went in a different direction and got the burger called "The Fatty," so there's that.

One thing I love about the menu is that all the burgers come in regular or slider size, which are half the size and half the price of the regular. I got two sliders because I wanted to try different kinds. And then of course we had to get the side of fried green beans because, well duh. This is Oklahoma. WE FRY EVERYTHING.

Review in brief: S&B Burger Joint is delicious, and I will be back again. The fried green beans are YUM, and you should try the sweet potato fries, because they're really good too.

Does your city keep it local?
What are your thoughts about peanut butter on a burger?

Yum, yum, yum! I love reading and writing about local places, so keep it up!

S&B's is tasty, but my boyfriend is allergic to peanuts and I don't eat them either for safety reasons, so we don't eat there because of their peanut products on burgers. Cross-contamination and all that jazz. The trend of putting peanut butter on burgers is actually radically diminishing the burger joints we can eat at. :(

My brother-in-law's job involves restaurants, both local and franchise. We find ourselves trying more local restaurants based on his recommendations. We have purchased a coupon book that features local restaurants also, which helps us to get to places that might not be on our radar.

That is such a bummer! I didn't even think about peanut allergies :(

I would totally order something called the fatty! Also is your husbands beard way more ginger than his regular head hair, that is how it is with my husband and I always think it is so weird that his head is two toned when he has a beard!

Fun to see some local flavor in your post. OKC through the back door. Rick Steves would be proud. :)

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Norman, and it's right by our house so it's perfect. The smokin' Okie is my burger of choice. Now I'm starving for S&Bs. Thanks. :)

I love that they have slider sizes too!! That's great for trying more than one variety. I have quite a few friends in OKC and am headed there for a wedding in August - I'll have to keep this in mind as a meal venue!

I am on a constant quest to find the perfect burger wherever I am and I love seeing these bad boys from OKC! I am seriously intrigued by fried green beans :)

This place looks amazing! I've never been to OKC, but I'd like to go after reading this. Just from a couple pictures it seems like it has a quirky (maybe even small-town?) vibe. And I agree - I LOVE posts about peoples cities/towns, so I hope you'll post more like this!

Okay I love that you're doing this! I've been in Norman for six years and now I'm working in OKC, I have no idea what is good, where things are, etc. So I'll definitely be tuning in!

Also, I've seen this place, I'll have to recommend it to the husband. :)

I love the slider idea! I feel like I'm always torn between 2-3 burgers whenever I go anywhere. I actually live just around the corner from the Boston Burger Company! (Guy Fieri rated it the #2 burger in the country...just saying!) It's delicious...maybe not "heart healthy" though, haha.

Peanut butter and bacon on a burger?! I have to go right now!! Fried green beans are so good!

okay, we LOVE S&B. I always get the theta slider. I mean. always. It's literally the only one I've had. Tristan gets ... something with mushrooms on it, but he also gets the FRIES with bacon and peanut butter on them, and he thinks they are just the cats meow. he's all about 'em. Excited you went.

I mean... If you ever need somebody to go try out a local restaurant with.. I know a girl. Her name is me.
it's me. ;)

You're making me hungry! But, I think I'll have to draw the line at mixing hamburger with my peanut butter. The PB is sacred!

If you only knew how hungry I am right now!! LOL. Part of me wants to jump in my car and drive to OKC just for this burger. But then, I am pregnant...and what would you do with me? lol. If I was there--I would definitely be ordering the fatty!

We LOVE S&B!!! And LOVE Keep it Local! I use my card every chance I get.

How fun!!! Local shops are my FAVORITE. I need to get out and explore my own city, some more. :)

peanut butter on a burger? ah, ten points for originality and another couple for daring. minneapolis doesn't do anything special for local businesses, but i feel like the city rallies and supports them all the same. it makes all the difference, doesn't it?

Rachel said...

Angel and I really like to prioritize supporting small and local businesses, and are really impressed with what we can find available in our area!
But I don't really think I'd be brave enough to try peanut butter on a burger...

Oh I love this!! I've been meaning to take in and share more of our local sights here. Growing up here my whole life I feel like I don't notice the beauty any more, and there are so many fun events and things to do (mostly in the summer) that I have absolutely never done! I'd love to see more local OKC places, in case I ever get down there one day! :)

This kind of reminds me of Zombie burger... in Des Moines, Iowa. Those sliders look crazy good. How awesome is it that I'm reading this close to dinner time. Thanks for that. Keeping it local in Burbank is a requirement... I think. Okay, not really, but people get really worked up when chains try to worm there way in. There are a ka-ba-gillion restaurants and other places I've never heard of because everybody's keepin it local.

Yay! It's so fun.

I think having S&B right next to my house would be reeeeeally bad news ;) I'll have to try the smokin' Okie next time!

Peanut butter on a burger? No, thanks! I'm not a huge pb fan unless it's Justin's pb and then I eat it like I'm an addict. That place sounds really fun. I'll have to take Dave.

PB on a burger - it's awesome! At Purdue we had a local joint that named burgers after famous people from West Lafayette. Of course that basically meant football players but I digress. Anyway, they had a burger with PB and I felt the same way when a friend dragged me there late one night to try it. I wouldn't say I'd go out of my way to get a PB burger but it was pretty darn delicious! It's what I order each time I do happen to stop by said burger joint.

I love that you wrote a little about OKC. I've grown to love it too and never thought I would. I'm still in love with Chicago too but I like that things are a bit slower here. I'm scared to admit but when I'm home visiting I notice myself thinking how in a hurry everyone seems, I don't feel that way here at all. Of course it has its down side sometimes too. Is it just me or have you noticed that too?
