An Egg for Baby Bum

4.06.2015

This year we added an egg for Baby Bum!

We were so excited to find out during our ultrasound a few weeks ago that Baby Bum is a girl! Of course, we would have been happy with either, but it's fun to put a gender and a name to our baby. We do have a name picked out, but we're not sharing with anyone until after she's born. And I'll actually be honest with you guys: I haven't decided if I feel comfortable sharing her name at all on the blog or if I'll just give her a nickname.

Of course, I don't mind if YOU know, but for some reason the whole Internet creepster thing takes on a new meaning when I think about my children. I don't know. I guess we'll have to wait and see how I feel about it later. But for now, I'll just keep calling her Baby Bum. (And don't worry: even if I do decide to keep the name private on the blog, I will totally tell you if you want to know. It will just be more of a private email type of situation. I'd be interested to know your personal feelings about this type of thing. I know bloggers who do it both ways and definitely see both sides.)

We told Jordan's family the night after our ultrasound, and it worked out well that I was planning on going to Texas that weekend anyway for my half marathon, so we were able to tell my family in person! My brother took a video of our fun reveal, and you can check it out below. My mom takes full credit for the balloon idea, by the way.

Jordan and I each had six balloons--three of each color--and we took turns popping them until there was just one balloon left. My family didn't know exactly what we were going to do, and they all thought we were going to pop until just one COLOR was left, so that's why in the video there's a huge cheer and then a pause and then another cheer. Cracks me up every time I watch it.

Thank you all so much for your excitement about our announcement and your prayers for a healthy pregnancy. It's been fun sharing this with all of you!

  1. that was the sweetest video! I love the double cheer like.. Wooo, wait, what? OOHH WOoo! hahaha it was beautiful! :) Baby Bum will be very much loved. And it truly is a pity that outside of our blogging community the internet can be a very dark place. I understand the desire of keeping her name from here until you feel comfortable. Hope you had an amazing Easter and congrats again on your little girl!

  2. Awwwwww! Congrats on having a girl! 💞💞
Love love love the way u chose to tell family and friends. I'm stealing it when we have our 2nd!
And the Internet.......I was always pretty cautious with my blog, but I am super protective of E so I understand completely where u are coming from. It was an easy decision for me, but hard at the same time because I want to post a bazillion photos of her. Lol. Keeping her name private was important for me too. I know whatever u decide will be best. And of course I want to know when y'all reveal the name!!
    When's your due date?

    1. Thank you so much! And thanks for sharing your thoughts. I haven't decided yet, but it's definitely something I'm thinking about. And of course I will share her name with you! I don't think you're a creeper :)

      I'm due August 19!

  3. This is wonderful news! I'm so excited for you! :) I've struggled with the whole internet thing and kids as well. I've gotten to a point where I currently don't want to post photos of my future child on social media. As a blogger and photographer, that may change drastically and I may not be able to resist, but for now, that's where my head is. He/she can share all they want when they're old enough to have social media profiles for themselves. :)

ANYWAY - that video is so cute - I love how people felt they were catching on and then pause to be like - wait, what? hahahahaha. So happy you got to share the excitement with your family!

  4. I love that video and your Mom sure did have a fun idea to pop balloons until there was only one left!

I can't give a full report and how I think I would feel sharing pictures on the internet about my kid. I wonder if you will be protective of the first one but then after baby 2 or 3 it isn't as big of a deal? I don't know. I'm sure you will figure it out though and if you don't share on the blog I think that is ok too.

  5. I love that video! What a fun way of announcing it. :)
And yay! A baby girl! I was 100% wrong, then (no boy, no twins)!

I understand your hesitation when it comes to the internet. As for me, I already know that, if we ever have children, I will not include them on my blog, even if it must be hard at times not to share pictures with your blogging friends! But again, like you said, emails do exist for that!

  6. I have my kids' names out there. But I don't have a ton of people reading my blog; mostly it's just for my own personal entertainment.

I think if you decide to keep the baby's name a secret, you could do a nickname (ex. Little Miss) or even a first initial. I read one blog where the author has pseudonyms for her kids (Silas=Eli), and occasionally, she accidentally uses a kid's real name. It can be confusing when she messes up. That's my two cents, for what it's worth,

  7. YAY a baby girl!!!! Love your reveal. We're 2/2 for baby girls here and it's been super fun so far (although everyone tells me it'll be crazy in the teenage years... haha)!

  8. Double yay from me - both for your baby girl and the fact I guessed right! :)

I have seen bloggers with kids find lots of creative ways to share about their kids while keeping the creepers at bay. One woman shared her kids' names by posting a photo of an item with each kid's name but then only refers to them by first initial. Another woman picks blog names (real ones...not like Pickle and Donut) that she uses for her kids on the blog. And then a third person posts a birth story, name reveal and baby photo all in one post that is redacted about 72 hours later.

    1. You were right! :) Good job.

I do like the idea of an initial or just using a different real name. I hadn't thought about posting the name and birth story and then taking it down. That's interesting! Because I do want to share with my actual blog readers... it's the random Internet strangers I'm not so keen on.

  9. For the longest time I did not even use Fredrik's name on my blog but then since in Sweden you can find out everything about someone online per the laws I figured it was easier to use it but since my brothers are still underage I do not use theirs. Part of it is that I am the one choosing to blog so why should they be googleable because of me for that, like how embarrassing for them if some high school classmate was like so your sister has a blog and she blogged about you!

  10. Aww, a girl! I'm so excited for you! I know what you mean, we would have been completely happy with either gender, but I just HAD to know which it would be! It made such a difference to me in making things seem a little more real. I'm glad to hear that you already have a name! It must not have been too much of a struggle? We picked one pretty quickly too, but decided not to share it with anyone either (except our mothers, haha) until she's born. I just think it's more fun that way. I always look forward to hearing a baby's name when it's birth is announced. I would love to know what you guys picked though, when the time comes! ;)

  11. Congratulations on baby bum being a little lady! I don't have any wisdom to offer as far as the name sharing goes, but I bet that once she is born, you guys will know what is right for you. So excited for you, friend!

  12. so cute! congrats on having a little girl! :) i feel the same way as you about not sharing certain things about my kids (when i have them) on the internet. it's just a strange world we live in where things are too accessible. but i'm also not there yet... so i have no idea what will happen!

  13. aww a little girl!! So excited for you!! I have not even thought about what I am going to do with the whole blog and baby thing? There are so many crazies out there these days and I really need to think about how much info I am willing to let out. I am thinking def the monogram! Love your reveal idea! xoxo

The internet is a big place, and for some reason it freaks me out sometimes to think about ANYONE reading the blog. But who knows. I might feel differently once she's here :) The monogram is a good idea, though!

  15. Super cute! I think it would be fine to keep calling her Baby Bum, if you want to. The way one blogger explained her choice to keep her daughter anonymous (no name, no pictures) was that, while she wanted to keep her daughter safe, the bigger issue was just privacy. One day her daughter will have social media accounts and she'll probably overshare just like the rest of us, but it'll be her choice to, and until that point she (the blogger/mom) didn't want to take that choice away from her daughter. And that made sense to me. But I have to admit, it would be a lot harder to do in practice and I have trouble imagining not sharing baby photos if I had a cute kid I wanted to show off. So... yeah. It's tough, I guess.

    1. I think I will share pictures, but at least at this point I don't think I'll share a ton. I agree that I want my kid to choose and not just have me share a picture of them running around without a diaper. Plus, just being honest, I am not a huge fan of reading blogs that are all kid all the time unless I've already been reading their blog for a while or something. I get that totally might change when I have a cute kid to share about, but there are so many other things, and being a mom is just one of them (albeit a large part). I don't know! It's interesting to hear everyone's points of view.

  17. Yay!!! I guessed correctly :) SOOO excited for you guys!! The video is awesome!! Love the cheers....so fun! Congrats, again! Haven't really thought much about the privacy issue with it comes to children, but enjoyed reading through the comments here. I'm sure you'll know what's right for you when the time comes!

  21. Cutest video EVER. I had to laugh at the cheering section. :P Oh and YAY IT'S A GIRL. ;)

P.S. My vote is and forever will be Amanda Jr. And then you could TOTALLY just call her Junior on the blog, and no one would know why. Except.. I just told the whole internet and RUINED IT.

  23. AHHHH! Oh my gosh! Such a great idea with the balloons and that video is something you'll absolutely cherish! Can you imagine showing that video to your little girl when she's old enough to understand?! I'm beyond excited for you and Jordan!

  24. yay! congrats! this is amazing. such a good video too.
i love your way of thinking - not that i have kids or anything, but i've wondered what i would do. i don't feel comfortable blabbing anyones name all over the blog - the only names I use are my husband's and my cats. and my best friend's sometimes because she's posted on it. but yeah i like the idea of telling people if they ask, or i might announce it once, but that's it. I'm scared like in 30 years my kid will go to a job interview and won't get it because the person did a google search and came up to a post about him potty training. just kidding haha

  25. That video was adorable! I love how excited everybody is. I kind of hoped that a chant would start (you know, "Girl! Girl! Girl!"). Still, congratulations!

  26. So, so, so fun! I love both of your reveal ideas. You know I don't put Man Cub's name out there. Not on the blog or FB or IG. It's mostly because I don't want his future boss to be able to Google his name and find all these posts about his baby days. When he's old enough to understand what it means to have his name floating around on the internet, we'll have a conversation and see if he wants me to drop the nickname or not. Until them, Mommy's the boss! Ha. But, like you, I will totally tell people I've gotten to know his name. And then there's still the tiny paranoid Mom in me that is afraid some creeper will see his pic and real name, call him out at the park/school/friend's house, and kidnap him. HIGHLY unlikely, I know, but I want to keep my kid safe as we navigate this crazy fun called the internet.

  27. That video was wonderful! Everyone was so excited! A huge congrats on a little girl! I'm so excited that I was finally right for once, haha!

I totally understand wanting to keep your kid's name private (though I am glad that you're willing to share with us via email after she's here! yay!). You're the momma and you know what's best for your kiddo. :)

  29. Haha aww I love that video!! They're like oh DUH…wait what?…AHHH! :) I feel like telling the families would be so so fun! I definitely understand not wanting to share the name…sometimes I think about the weird internet trolls and get all creeped out but then I love sharing things with my blog friends and I'm way too lazy to make my blog private plus I like meeting new people…struggle :) I'm glad you're willing to share via email because I'll be really curious to know!
I hope everything is going well and you're feeling good!!

  31. Why am I getting all teary, when I don't even know you? I guess baby news just does that to me. So thrilled for you that you are having a little girl. I support your decision 100% to not put her name out there. You'll think of a cute nickname to use on your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yay a girl!!! I don't know how I feel about the real-name thing either. I know bloggers who use their kids' real name and some who only use initials. I only know of one that gave her kids fake names for blog purposes; if she hadn't said something on her blog I would have never known the names she was posting were fake, but now that I know they're fake, I think maybe it's kind of strange to make up whole other names for them? But I don't know. Different strokes for different folks. Gotta do what feels right for you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Congrats!!! I love that you got to reveal the gender in person with your family AND in a fun way, too. :)

As for names, I'm not a mom, BUT I have wondered what I would/will do in that situation. I totally get both sides, but I think for internet purposes I would likely give my kids nicknames or use their first initial. And I think I would only do that because I would want them to feel like they get to create their own presence online, and only if they choose to do so!

But either way, it's really a personal decision and there really is no right or wrong one! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ahhhh congrats!! I've been so excited for these posts- I am so excited for you both! I have never thought much about not sharing my kids names on the internet (I think because the first several blogs i've read for years all use the real kids' names), but I think you totally have a point in the creeper side of things. Whatever you decide will be fantastic (and if you choose not to share I'll be emailing you because I've been speculating names since I found out you were preggo haha).

  37. Cute, cute, cute! Congratulations on the little lady :) I love everyone's excitement in the video. Thank you for sharing!

Ooh, the internet + baby names is a tough one. I can definitely understand your hesitation and I see why people choose not to reveal the name or even a lot of photos of their children. Maybe you can use a nickname? That being said, I'm kind of obsessed with what other people name their children and I have no idea why. It's always the first thing I ask (and I'm not a creeper, promise). Do what feels right to you!

  39. Yay, baby girls are awesome! I have so many little sisters that I'm a bit partial, I will admit.

The baby name question is hard one. I wouldn't put it too far past me to just use a completely different name, or a mispelling of the real name, on my blog. But, in general, I don't see giving out first names as too much of a privacy issue. Everywhere you go, everyone knows your first names. My parents are well-known in their own community, so even before blogging I would randomly run into people who knew who my name because they know my parents. I know that I will not be giving out actual birth dates, or middle names, or my maiden name--because those contain much more useful information about identity than a first name does. I have also worked pretty diligently to just be "Rachel G" and not get our last name too involved with our blog, but I use my first and last names on any magazine articles or other published work, so it's not impossible to make the connection. The good thing is, Angel's last name is super common, so even if I search for my full name, tons of pictures of other women come up, and none of me, in spite of a blog full of pictures of myself. haha!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Love the gender reveal! So much fun!

As for the sharing on the blog, I'm right there with you. I've come across a couple of articles lately that really makes me question how much I share on the blog. But, it drives me crazy when I come across a blog that never share anything. Not really sure why, it just does. I'm interested to see what you come up with, though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congratulations! Yay!!! The video was SO cute, what a great idea!

I'm always on the fence about how much personal/identifying information to share. I'm not sure what I'd do in your situation, honestly! I try not to share any names or other identifying information about anyone who hasn't explicitly consented to (so, basically everyone but Ben and myself), so I feel like I'd want to extend that to my kid as well. I know there are so many mom blogs and that people like documenting their kids' lives (makes total sense), I'm just not sure I'd be comfortable sharing that much about my kid. I don't know! But then again, I don't like when people use nicknames and would rather them just use real names. I totally get why they do it, it just makes it easier for me to read and connect to them with a real name vs. a nickname or initial. So basically what I'm saying is...use the real name because I selfishly want you to ;) At this point, though, since you've already been calling her (HER! wow!) Baby Bum, it wouldn't be weird to me if you kept using a nickname.

  46. That video is adorable! And congrats on the little girl!!

I don't have to make the decision anytime soon, but personally I'm leaning towards not sharing my kids' names or photos on my blog. There's one blogger with three girls, and she calls them "Big Girl," "Middle Girl," and "Little Girl" on her blog, and only shares photos that are either taken from behind or with the faces cropped out. I kinda like that approach.

    ReplyDelete
  47. YAY a girl!!! Having a baby girl is awesome :) The privacy thing is hard. I don't mind sharing her name, but I want to be careful about pictures. I've shared some and I still will, but I try to be mindful of what she would think about it when she's older. It's hard!
