Unintentional Post-Thanksgiving Detox

11.30.2015

I'm writing this on Sunday afternoon, coming at you from the other side. Not to be dramatic, but I nearly died yesterday. Thursday night, after stuffing myself with Thanksgiving dinner, I started feeling nauseous. Not an I'm-too-full nauseous either. I felt out of sorts all day Friday, and then Saturday was terribleIt's bad enough to be sick, but it's not like I could stop feeding my baby, so every two hours I had to pull myself together enough to nurse, and it was just NOT FUN. I'll let you imagine for yourself.

On the plus side, I can count on less than two hands the number of things I've had to eat since Thursday night, so I guess I'm in the middle of an unintentional Thanksgiving sugar detox to get me ready for Christmas cookies. (In case you're wondering, I have been drinking lots of clear fluids, and shockingly my milk supply doesn't seem to have been horribly affected. R doesn't seem to be any worse of wear either, so I guess those articles you read about the miraculous antibody capabilities of breast milk are true.)

On top of that, we had an ice storm, and our power was out all day, so we were camped out at my in-laws, who live a mile from us and did have power. Nothing like being sick at someone else's house, am I right? So that's how the past few days have gone. I'm hopeful that things are on the upswing now, although the mention of food still makes me want to run to the bathroom. But I seem to be keeping things... in, and we have power again, so my freezer of breast milk lives to be thawed another day.

In other news, our fifth annual turkey trot was a success! Every year, my family puts on a local Thanksgiving turkey trot in our neighborhood. (If you're interested, I blogged about our humble beginnings here.) We've steadily increased our numbers each year, and this time we had over 950 runners for a timed 5k and untimed 1-mile fun run.
We do everything from ordering and designing shirts to medals to getting water and bagels at the finish to organizing volunteers. It's quite an undertaking and pretty stressful, but it's always a fun time too! All the money raised goes to benefit North Texas Youth for Christ.

R was an absolute trouper the entire time, and I still can't believe it went so well with her. But then again, when am I going to stop being surprised by her? She's the best. (Later that evening it all caught up to her, and she had a very rough time going to sleep with lots of screaming involved, but we can't all be on our best behavior all the time.)

All things considered, it was a pretty memorable first Thanksgiving as a family of three! I hope yours involved less sickness and ice than mine. There's a lot to be thankful for this year, not the least of which is a working heater and the ability to keep food down.

You poor thing--illness over holidays is the worst! I love that your family hosts a turkey trot every year. Our church hosts a giant one and I can't imagine pulling it all together as just one family. What a great memory-maker! Our baby and I strolled out to the course of ours to watch my husband run, and I had fun creating a "Go Daddy!" sign for the first time ever. :)

That sounds TERRIBLE. I'm glad you're doing better. I had a cold when Gracie was 2 months old, and even then I felt like I couldn't take care of her. You are a superhero.

I love this idea for the Turkey day race!!! Minus that the weather was AWFUL on Thursday!!! Glad you had so many people come out for such a good cause

Oh, being sick around the holidays is the worst! Glad you seem to be feeling better now, hopefully that trend continues!

Oh, I feel horrible for you - being that sick and having to be at someone else's house, too, sounds just awful. Glad you are starting to feel better!!

oh my gosh, i used to be the worst binge eater, and a year or so ago, i had my final binge.. i think i ate the whole of kroger, and then everything mcdonalds had as well. i'm only slightly exaggerating. i had issues. anyway. i was proper sick, like you mentioned. haven't binged since. i have eaten a lot, like thanksgiving, but not so much that i make myself sick, because gosh that sucks.
yay for R being awesome. except for the sleeping part, but hey. like you said, we can't always be on our best behaviour!

Glad you are up and about. Makes you appreciate normal, everyday good health! And....as one wordsmith to another, one of my teeny pet peeves is trouper vs. trooper. If someone carries on through difficult times, the word is "trouper".

I surprisingly did not stuff myself as much this year as I have done in year's past. HOWEVER, I think I eat too much everyday so maybe my stomach is just used to being expanded ;)

I'm so impressed by your family putting on the turkey trot! What a fun memory to make/thing to organize with family.

Oh no! I hope you're feeling much better and that food starts to sound good again soon...because it's Christmas, which means it's time to EAT.

Ugh! Sick at someone else's house is never ideal. And taking care of a little one on top of it? You are superhuman! Glad you're on the mend now. Very cool that your family puts on that race every year!!

There's nothing worse than being sick at someone else's house! Ugh. (Love seeing Reese in the bird shirt top, too. I remember my sweet girl wearing it and it makes me happy to see it on another sweet girl!) Miss ya, friend!

You poor thing! I never got sick while nursing Aiden like that and I can't imagine how tough that was. Yuck! But oh my goodness those baby pictures?! She is such a doll. Those eyes!!

Aww, hope you're feeling much better now! Being sick while not even in your own home is no fun at all, I know. Crazy ice storms--I'm happy to live without those.

Oh man that is a horrible way to detox, hope you are feeling much better. So awesome that you organize that run and donate the money, what a turn out.

Oh no, glad you are on the mend!! That is just the worst you were forced to leave your house when unwell, oh man!! Sounds like it all worked out well in the end, and yay for not losing your milk supply.

Oh my gosh you had a very eventful past few days! I wonder what made you so sick? Hurray for your milk staying good!

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear you were so sick! That's just terrible! Hopefully you're back to 100% by now!

Also, I think it's super cool that your family began and continues this turkey trot tradition in the neighborhood! And nearly 1000 people is a LOT to organize and keep up with! Go you guys! :)

I am totally impressed with your family's organization of an annual thanksgiving turkey trot! This is a little unrelated question and maybe wierd but did you have professional baby photos taken of R when she was a newborn? I'm pregnant with my baby to be and just got back a quote from a photographer that it is $125 for a sitting fee and then a minimum of $450 for an order for photos that do not have the watermark. I am wondering what other new moms such as yourself did especially since you have some skills behind the camera and some of the photos of R are just adorable.

The Lady Okie said...

Thank you so much! That's nice of you to say :) I decided not to pay for newborn photos. Like you said, they are expensive, and I figured I could take almost as good ones on my own. The downside is that obviously I couldn't really get any with me in them, but for just the photos of R, I took them myself and am happy with how they turned out!

It's a tough go when you're feeling crummy but good on yah for holding it together!
That turkey trot is pretty impressive! I always dream of being more involved in the community.
