Fun Weekends + Our First Family Fun Run!

3.05.2018

We have had two fantastic weekends the last two weeks! It's been full of family time and playtime with the kids. Plus, this past weekend it was so nice outside and I got in a 7-mile run on Saturday! That's the longest I've run in over a year and a half, and it felt really good (I also felt like I might die, but I suppose that's to be expected). I started off feeling like I was running through sand, and my Garmin told me my first two miles were 10:42 and 10:38, so that sounds about right. But every single mile was faster, and I ran my last mile in 8:20! My half marathon in at the end of April, and I'm hoping to get up to at least one 10-mile run before then.

Two weekends ago, we packed up both kids and walk/ran downtown Oklahoma City in a family 1-mile fun run. It took us a whopping 21 minutes to finish, but amazingly we weren't last! We were second to last ;) I convinced Jordan to sign up for the race a month or so ago. I thought R would like it, and even though we can walk a mile around our neighborhood for free, we got t-shirts and medals (!), and it seemed like a fun family outing--the first of many family runs, I hope! I'm excited for R to get big enough to do a 5k with me, but I know that is a few years down the road yet.
^^^ I think this picture is so adorable, but also it's $12 for a low-res digital file. Why you gotta be like that, race photography people?

The morning of the race it was pouring rain outside, and we spent an hour debating whether or not we should even attempt to head downtown on the chance the rain would stop by the time the race started. We finally decided to just forget it and go to breakfast, so we changed out of our running stuff, packed the kids in the car, and were halfway to Jimmy's Egg before deciding we should at least try to go downtown. We turned around, went back home to change back into what we were wearing before, packed up the kids again, and rushed downtown to meet up with a friend and her daughter, who were already there.

The rain had let up, but just as the race started it began sprinkling. We arrived at the start line and met my friend literally right as the announcer who was counting down said, "one," and the gun went off.

I'll be honest: it was cold, and it rained on us the whole time, but R had an absolute blast. A week later, she is still talking about "going downtown and seeing the race." She loved running in the rain, and J was in the Ergo all bundled up, so he stayed toasty warm.

The race ended at half court of the basketball court where the OKC Thunder play. R was running down a small hill to go into the finishing chute when she tripped on the cement and flipped over herself right into a giant puddle. She was completely soaked from head to toe, and she hopped up and said, "Oh no! I fall down!" and kept running.

Please note our blistering one-mile speed of 20:20. Sign us up for the next Olympics!

It was kind of everything I had hoped it would be, and I'm so glad we did it even though it was rainy! Of course, an hour later the sun came out and it ended up being a beautiful day. I took the kids to the park, and J sat in a swing for the first time like a big boy. He wasn't so sure at first, but I think he liked it.
This past weekend was really fun too. On Saturday we played a lot outside, and then in the evening we went out to eat just the four of us. We've been out to eat with the kids before, but we have never gone just as a family. We went to a burger place, and Jordan and I ordered for ourselves and then handed the waitress our menus. Ten minutes later, we realized that we had completely forgotten to order R any food, and we had to flag down our waitress and put in an order for her! That shows you how often we eat out!

She eats a full serving herself and can't eat off our plates anymore. I have a feeling J is not far behind. That boy loves food and gets so excited when I put him in his chair at the table. He had eggs and oranges for the first time this weekend and absolutely loved it. I also gave him a waffle with peanut butter on it, and he ate almost an entire waffle himself along with half a clementine. I'm in denial that he will be 9 months old this month. That means I need to start thinking about his first birthday!

I love being a mom to these two so much and truly thank God for my little family every day. It's been nice to be able to spend lots of time together (and outside!). I hope you had a good weekend and have a great start to this week. I actually don't mind Mondays at all and enjoy the fresh start and energy I feel (because by Friday I am dead. DEAD. This past Friday I went to bed at 8:00 right after putting the kids down). Plus, I finally went grocery shopping, so I won't have to eat oatmeal for lunch this week like I did last week! Thank goodness.

Hey - my one mile pace isn't too far behind just with myself ;) haha
I love R had a great time. What a fun memory for her.

I'm so glad the mile race was a blast even in the rain! Yes you can do it for free at home but R got a medal which is probably gold to her.

That's so neat that you got to do the family fun run together! Last fall I ran the "Right to Birth 5k" at Lake Hefner, and it was so cool to see all the families who were walking or running it together :)
Oh man, little kids and appetites are no joke! Sometimes my husband will spontaneously take me out to eat for a fun date, and we'll bring our son because it's short notice and not always easy to get a sitter. But I think he's finally starting to hit the point where he eats too much to eat bits of food off our plates anymore.

What a fun time! I giggled picturing Reese but gosh that is just so fun you guys did it. I love that you turned around and decided just to go for it. We went to Chipotle on Friday and had to get 4 meals and both kids ate their kids meals. No more eating off our plates, ha.

Phillip likes to do races with the kids (I'm a happy spectator and don't want that to change.) It's so much fun!

It took us over an hour to do a 5k with our dog so you are in great company, haha! I love the idea of a 1 mile fun run as a family! I need to look into some of the ones Memphis has for next year. That would be so fun. I'm so glad you guys had such a great time. :)

I love the last pic of you and your squad. Also, I'm so inspired by your family fun run! Did R walk/run the entire mile by herself?? I know she's a couple of months older than Ava and Ava did spend like 30 weeks of the last year immobile due to cast and brace, but I don't think she could walk a mile on her own.... 21 minutes is pretty good for a two year old! Rockstar R, no doubt!
