Fuzzy Tacos and Selfie Sticks

2.13.2015

In case you haven't noticed, Jordan and I aren't so much what you would call high-maintenance holiday people. Don't get me wrong: I love gifts. But once I realized that being married and sharing a bank account basically means that when you exchange gifts you're really just accepting a gift someone bought you with your own money, I was kind of over exchanging gifts for Valentine's Day or anniversaries.

Plus, I never wanted to be one of those girls who had secret expectations about things I wanted and then got mad at Jordan when I didn't get them. So ever since we started dating, I try to make it clear to Jordan exactly what I am expecting or what I want to do on special occasions (birthdays, anniversary, etc.). Writing that out makes me sound like a nazi, but the truth is, Jordan doesn't really care what we do and I usually do care (maybe because I'm the girl? I don't know), so it just works out better for my own state of mind and our relationship if we're both on the same page.

All that long ramble to say, we don't make a huge deal out of Valentine's Day. Every year we get each other a card and order Chinese or go out to eat or something. Except we never go out to eat on Valentine's Day, because it's pure madness out there.

Something we do every year, unrelated to Valentine's Day, is go to a Thunder basketball game. We've gone to at least one game every year since they came to town (Oklahoma's first and only professional sports team!). Last year my whole family came up from Texas, and we went to a game.

This year, I bought tickets for a home game on February 2, and we decided that was going to be our Valentine's date. It was a Monday, and after work we changed and headed downtown. First stop: Fuzzy's Taco Shop for dinner. Do you have a Fuzzy's in your town? I think it's the absolute worst name for a restaurant, but the tacos are delicious.

I married him for the dimples.

I swear there's not a bad seat in the stadium. Except for the one time two years ago when I splurged on tickets in the lower section, we always end up sitting in the cheap seats, four or five rows from the top. At first when you walk in you get a little bit of vertigo, but after that it's just fine. The 7-foot players look like ants, but whatever.

It was really fun just sitting and talking and watching the game. The Thunder won, so that made it even more fun! After the game, we attempted a selfie, but Jordan is terrible at taking selfies with his phone, so it was pretty much a blurry mess.

I think we need a selfie stick. But then again...

So that was our Valentine's 2015! Tomorrow I think we'll maybe order Chinese and chill at home. I hope those of you who are braving the crowded restaurants have fun!

Do you like Valentine's Day?
Do you and your significant other buy each other gifts?

That sounds like a nice "Valentine's Day." Ryan and I aren't doing gifts or cards, but we will be running a 5K that morning and goofing off together/playing games the rest of the day - which I am really looking forward to after a busy couple of weeks! Also, running the Chocolate Lover's 5K means we don't even have to buy any chocolate because the race gives it away!

P.S. The mental image of fuzzy tacos makes me cringe.

I really dislike OKC but like I've always told Alex- Oklahoma needs something so I'm glad they have a decent basketball team. We don't have a fuzzy taco place but I agree that they really need to change a name. I can't decide if a selfie stick would be cool or lame. And last thought- Jordan is probably the only guy I've seen that can pull off a mustache without looking like a creepy child molester.

Ok the selfie stick is the worst invention. When we were in Hawaii all the Japanese visitors had them and kept running into people. Yikes.

I agree on not a bad seat at the Peake. Loud City works just fine for me.

i really must admit, when i read "fuzzy tacos" i didn't know what to expect hahahaha.
it sounds like y'all have a solid valentines day tradition (chinese food makes everything better in my book!) hahaha

Even when I have an SO, I don't celebrate Valentine's Day. I think it's a pretty cheesy holiday and I'd rather have the guy surprise be just because instead of just because he has to.

Also, selfie sticks are terrible and I love you so much more for agreeing with that.

i used to be one of those girls. i expected cory to know what i wanted to do or buy and after being disappointed a couple times, i decided it wasn't worth it! plus, he was always stressed because he didn't want to disappoint me. it's much more enjoyable now that i don't expect him to plan it all. we normally try to do something fun together {i'd love to go to a professional basketball game!} and maybe dinner but like you, it's normally the weekend before or after valentine's. we are staying in on saturday though!

Hahaha that selfie stick meme is accurate. I love it! This is so fun. Caleb and I don't make a big fuss over valentines day, either! We do something pretty low key and keep the expectations low. I'd rather save the fun stuff for our anniversary. Stuff we can do together!

We don't do valentine exchanges here either. Or a big date typically. And I also don't buy my kid anything ;)

The selfie stick sellers were prolific when we were in Rome. I wasn't actually familiar with the concept until then. That ecard is perfection.

I could not agree more with you about holidays, anniversaries, birthdays etc. It's a whole new ballgame when you share a bank account! I care more than my husband does too, and this year he started feeling bad about it so he found a cooking class for us to go to! So I'm excited about that, it's very us. However, that will be on the 15th, we will not be going out to eat on Valentine's Day either haha... pizza and wings at home for us! I love that y'all go to Thunder games, that's something we would do too! :)

Tracy said...

Totally agree with you about the gifts part - they're just not as fun when they're purchased with money you both share. We haven't even talked about what we're doing this weekend yet...we'll probably make dinner at home, but we definitely won't be going out. Valentine's Day and it's on a Saturday? No thanks.

Laura said...

We don't really buy gifts either. We might make a special dinner or take a trip to the beach or zoo (both are free!), but it's more about an extra excuse to spend quality time together in our opinions. Can't beat that!

How fun! My husband and I usually keep things very low-key for Valentine's Day as well - it's too crazy out there! And selfie-sticks are so ridiculous! They're all the rage with tourists in Europe, and it's kind of sad to see someone using a selfie-stick in a church that's hundreds of years old.

I love Fuzzy's but there is no parking at that location. We got amazing seats once from my husband's company. It was club level with free food and alcoholic drinks! I was in heaven! We are probably gonna go to our usual hangouts tomorrow. Mcnellies and Fassler Hall. Have you been to Fassler yet? Estherdavison@gmail.com

i've always been curious as to how selfie sticks work... how does it tap the button to take the picture? since it's on the screen... or do you have to use the self timer? too complicated!

Rebecca Jo said...

haha - that Ecard!
We NEVER go out on Valentines' day either for dinner... but we're going out for BREAKFAST this year... I'm so excited about that :) Definitely wont be a rush on the crowds then :)

LOL! I just bought a selfie stick, for real. But, I can justify it: a) I don't plan on taking it out of the house, b) I'd like to use it for getting some shots of me working on stuff for my business since no one is ever around to take photos of me, and c) I have no recent photos of me with my kids. :)

We're totally the same way with V-day and anniversaries. Our anniversary is actually Monday, so we'll go out to dinner since it's pretty much the only time we go out sans children, but we don't bother with gifts for the smaller occasions.

I do love Valentine's day, but really just because it's right after my birthday, so it's an excuse to keep eating sweets! Haha. We don't exchange gifts, but this year I decided to surprise him with some homemade peanut butter cups!

I fully support getting takeout and staying home, the restaurants are crazy and really how romantic is it to be surrounded by 100's of couples.

Beka @ Sunshine to the Square Inch said...

I might be commenting twice but I can't tell....anyways, the selfie stick comes with a little wireless remote that you can use via blue tooth. I used to think the selfie sticks were ridiculous but now I'm thinking they might come in handy with all the traveling we do.

Beka @ Sunshine to the Square Inch said...

I'm glad you all had a good Valentine's Day celebration. Dave and I are celebrating right now by coming to a coffee house where there is free wifi so I can blog =) Isn't that nice of him?

Ok - I gotta admit that I despised the selfie stick but it is looking more and more appealing. The reason I want one though isn't for a mass amount of selfies but rather to be able to take our own picture traveling where our arms aren't clearly in it and to capture background scenes. So ... I'll probably be buying on in Thailand.

But hey .... you did pretty much say you never wanted a smart phone and you got one so maybe a selfie stick is next ;)

Two things!
1. We saw a Fuzzy's in my college town the last time we visted and I LOVE tacos...but I remember saying "ew! Fuzzy?!" and we never tried it. I'll definitely give it a chance if you say they're good!
2. Selfie sticks! We counted over 100 people using selfie sticks in NYC. Yes, we kept a running tally throughout our trip. Ha!

hahahaha.. still laughing from the first paragraph.. awesome..

We ate at Fuzzy's when we were in Stillwater last year! It was delicious! :)

Congrats to the Thunder! A basketball game date is right up our alley. We are huge basketball fans (Go Grizz!). :)

We don't typically exchange gifts on Valentine's day. Sometimes we make something for each other (like built me a chair one year) and a lot of times we make homemade cards together and then exchange them, haha! We do give Christmas & birthday gifts. And a lot of times we do anniversary gifts (usually in the $10 or less range, though). Just something small that said we were thinking of each other. But we're big travelers. That's more where our money is spent. ;) Speaking of traveling AND selfie sticks (well I was talking about traveling and you mentioned selfie sticks)... Christopher just bought one. He wants to have it while we're at the Grand Canyon next month. The man has no shame and it's just one more reason I love him. ;)

My fiance and I are also super low-key about Valentine's Day. No gifts, but always food. Lots of food. I would love to go to a home Thunder game. I've seen them play in Indy, but I think it'd be fun to see them in their element!

The Girl who Loved to Write said...

That is an awful name for a food place..just no. But cheers to low-key Valentine's Days--they're always the best!

That was a nice one! Look at you too blurry cuties!
I've never seen people with selfie sticks in real life yet, but they must be quite a sight. :)

Amy @ A Desert Girl said...

I think it's very wise to be specific about your expectations for various holidays. You're right - guys usually don't care so girls might as well make it easy for them and then not have a reason to be disappointed.

Going out for Valentine's Day is utter craziness in my opinion. Home is where it's at.

The Lady Okie said...

Ha! That totally justifies it :) I think it would be great to get photos of you with the kids!

Five years ago, I bought my husband a tshirt with a quote from the movie Airplane on it…one of his faves. It said, “Oh stewardess. I speak jive.” He loved it. The shirt was really soft, too. Anyway, it has become a tradition, now, that we surprise each other with a fun new shirt for Valentine’s Day. Also, it’s 2 days after my birthday, so things tend to get combined for the two. The shirt idea works out for me because I still get gifts for both. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that being married and receiving gifts is like someone buying you something with your own money. I’ve felt like that since we got married, too.
